Is Your Birth Chart Data Safe? What Kundli Apps Can Do With Your Details
To make a Kundli you hand over your full name, exact date and time of birth and your birthplace – often for your children and partner too. That combination is personal data, and it is worth knowing where it goes.
Why birth details are sensitive
Date and place of birth are used to verify identity by banks, telecom providers and government services. Combined with a name and a phone number or email, they make a strong identity profile. Families also enter details of children and elderly parents who never agreed to share them.
India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 treats such information as personal data: apps must say why they collect it, collect only what they need, and let you erase it.
What astrology apps commonly do
Practices vary widely between apps, so read each privacy policy. Things to look for:
- Server storage – many apps save every chart you make on their servers, often permanently.
- Advertising and analytics SDKs – third-party code that can link your activity to an advertising ID.
- Marketing use – birth details used to target paid consultations, gemstone sales or puja offers.
- Account deletion – whether deleting your account actually removes your charts.
Five questions to ask before you enter your details
- Are my birth details uploaded, or calculated on my device?
- Are there advertising or tracking SDKs in the app?
- Is my data shared with or sold to anyone, including "partners"?
- Can someone else using my phone see my saved charts?
- Can I export and permanently delete everything myself?
